Differences and advantages and disadvantages of forging and casting

November 18, 2024
1. Differences between forging and casting
Both forging and casting belong to the metal processing industry, but there are obvious differences in their processing methods, material organization and mechanical properties. Forging refers to the processing method of hammering, extruding and other processing of metal billets with tools such as steel hammers and forging presses, so that they can obtain the required shape and performance in the process of continuous deformation. Casting refers to the process of melting metal, using gravity or pressure to make the metal liquid flow into the mold, and waiting for it to solidify to obtain the required shape and size.

2. Forging and casting have their own advantages and disadvantages
Forging has more advantages than casting, as follows:

(1) Advantages of forging

Forging can increase the density and strength of metal, so forgings are usually more suitable for manufacturing high-strength, high-wear resistance and high-temperature tolerance mechanical parts than castings. Forging can also change the organizational structure of the metal and eliminate internal defects, improving the toughness and plasticity of the metal.

(2) Advantages of casting

Compared with forging, casting has lower costs and better advantages in producing large and complex parts. In addition, casting can produce parts with complex shapes and large shells, because casting can easily achieve internal cavities and thin-walled structures, which cannot be achieved by forging.

(3)Disadvantages of forging

Forging requires higher machine equipment and energy costs, and the size and shape of metal workpieces processed by forging are subject to some restrictions. At the same time, the working environment of forging is noisy, dusty and impurities are more, and the work quality has a certain impact on the health of workers.

(4)Disadvantages of casting

Compared with forging, metal parts processed by casting are usually lower in strength and density, and there may be defects that cause waste. In addition, parts manufactured by casting may have surface defects and pores, which affect the service life and performance of parts.

In general,
Advantages of forging: Improve metal properties. Forging can change the internal structure of the metal and refine the grains, thereby improving the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the metal. Obtain the desired shape and size. Forging can more easily change the shape and size of the metal to meet the desired design requirements. This is especially important for parts with complex shapes.

Advantages of casting: Low cost. Casting is a relatively economical production method, especially for mass production of large parts. Suitable for making complex shapes. Casting can make parts with complex shapes, especially in parts that require hollow internal structures, which has obvious advantages. However, compared with forging, casting may be slightly inferior in some performance aspects. For example, cast metal parts may not be as strong and tough as forged parts. In addition, defects such as shrinkage holes and pores may also occur during the casting process, affecting the quality of the parts. Therefore, the choice of forging or casting should be determined according to specific production needs and conditions of use. In some fields that pursue high performance, such as automobiles and aviation, forging is more widely used. In some fields with high cost requirements, casting is more common. In general, forging and casting are both important metal processing methods, each with its own unique advantages and application scenarios. Which method to choose depends on specific needs and conditions.

3. Scope of application and development trend analysis
The superior performance of forging determines that it has a wide range of applications, especially suitable for manufacturing high-quality and high-demand metal parts. At present, forging technology is developing rapidly, mainly in the following aspects:

(1) Improvement of manufacturing process and processing equipment. This makes the forging process more automated and standardized, and can be produced on a larger scale.

(2) Research and development and application of new materials. This makes the forging process more widely used in the manufacture of high-performance alloy materials and other fields.

(3) Application of advanced CAD/CAM technology. This allows the forging process to better meet the requirements of complex shapes and high precision.

In short, forging has better workpiece performance, surface quality and processing capabilities than casting, and can be used to manufacture high-quality and high-demand metal parts, and has broad application prospects.
